Crystal Clear & Cloudy will meet in November
In the exhibition Crystal Clear & Cloudy the paintings of Dani Jakob and Markus Saile enter into a multilayered dialogue, touching upon notions of transparency and opacity, and quietly yet intensely investigating the nature of the painting – composed of the image carrier and colors.
Markus Saile’s paintings reveal superimposed thick and glazed layers of color. They allow us to anticipate shapes and spaces while remaining abstract. At times we are able to glimpse the primary coat of the canvas or the wooden surfaces, on which Saile starts his paintings. The painting process becomes visible in scratches or smears, when colors are being reapplied and partly washed-off. This method gives the paintings a formal tranquility while maintaining active and seemingly in motion.
Dani Jakob’s paintings evolve out of the interest in and handling of different materials, such as silk, burlap, or synthetic textiles. Depending on the texture of the fabrics
she chooses the colors, which in turn each react differently depending on the undercoat. Often, the stretcher bars become a formal element of the paintings due to their exposure from the transparent fabrics Jakob uses. The incorporation of the stretcher bar stems from the desire to create imagery as a unity of painting, structure, and the space of representation.
The colors, the materials and their texture – the materiality of the paintings – are the protagonists of this exhibition. Simultaneously, the old subject matter of the image as window-to-the-world comes into play. We think we are able to look through its layers onto something in the background, in indefinite distance, which escapes immediate tangibility.
The paintings of Dani Jakob and Markus Saile oscillate between these two poles. They seem to be wide-open and, through their dialogue with each other, create a flickering:
crystal clear and cloudy, transparent, cloudy and hazy.
